Class Title Instructor
Color and Quilts of Illusion Karen Combs

Let Karen show you secrets to creating different Quilts of Illusions. We will start by learning the secrets to creating the look of transparency in your quilts. Transparency is the use of color to make your quilts look like one color is laying over another. It's very simple once you know how. Next, we will create intriguing 3-D cubes by drawing in perspective, as well as in isometric perspective and use color to enhance the illusion. (You say you can't draw? No problem, if you can draw a wiggly straight line, you can draw in perspective!) Karen will also demo using color in quilts to create "sparkle", fabric selection and piecing, so you can create your own quilts of illusion at home!

Skill level: All levels.

Sea Turtle and Coral Reef Kathy McNeil

Magical memories of our cruise will be captured forever with this beautiful Sea Turtle and Coral reef wall hanging. Kathy loves introducing students to the wonders of pictorial quilting.  Learn two different methods of appliqué; Fused raw edge, and the new easy Apliquick method of turned edges that is sweeping the country. You may choose either method or mix techniques in this project. Sew together the background of sand and water at home before coming aboard. In class we will make the turtle and the coral reef elements and appliqué those to the background. I will demonstrate using fabric paint crayons to add color and reflections on the sand. We will end class with a discussion of how to quilt your project when you get home. See the free video of Kathy demonstrating the Apliquick method on her web site.

Class notes: Holding a quilt seminar on a cruise ship is a unique experience. Sometimes there are space and time challenges that prevent our being able to be "project oriented" and we must concentrate more on process. It is very unlikely that you will have an absolutely finished project at the end of a class. It is helpful if your expectations match these realities. But regardless of how far you are able to progress, our instructors are professionals—some of the best in the quilting world—and we know you will learn many new techniques and have a wonderful experience!
