As we begin our journey on the beautiful waters of Alaska this class will study and pay homage to the magnificent ship Titanic. You will create the quilt block that was on the ballroom floor using quick piecing techniques. Lots of options for design layout will be explored. Fun for all as we go back in time. Sewing machines will be provided for this class.
TUESDAY MORNING /
FRIDAY AFTERNOON
Shadowed Circles - Judy Mathieson
This project is a small wall hanging which features special fabrics in a shadowed circle to create a three dimensional effect. You will learn how to isolate a special area of your fabric with a viewer, baste fabric to freezer paper using the iron and create a shadow for the circle. Use hand or machine appliqu³ to attach the shadowed circle to a background square with dark/light triangles. A border of triangles will also be designed. Sewing machines will be provided for this class. More information here.
Collage Landscapes - Laura Cater-Woods
Explore your personal landscape (imaginary, interpretive, observed) in this fun, fast paced and slightly messy workshop. Create a series of small images using a variety of materials and collage techniques. This creative process workshop is designed to help jump-start personal imagery. Various construction methods are used to interpret the small pieces as wall hangings.

The class will include wonderful techniques for dyeing silk using acrylic cased dyes. The dyes remain very soft to the touch and can easily be heat set with an iron. The morning will include dyeing two or three 30î X 30î scarves or 36î X 36î scarves. If the student wishes to dye more scarves, there will be plenty of time. The scarves will dry and then be heat set. Friday afternoon will consist of creating silk scarf clothing. Many design options will be demonstrated and discussed. Sewing machines will be furnished.
Journey to Jericho - Kaye England
This split day class will be a lecture demonstration class. Based on KayeÍs book Journey to Jericho you will plan and begin work on your own design for this cherished quilt. The first session will be planning, techniques, styles and symbolism. We will then have a few days to think about this as you take in the scenery along our cruise route. The second session will be how to execute designs you will have formed. Many options will be available to you.
SATURDAY - ALL DAY
Mariner's Compass: Split to the Center - Judy Mathieson
This class is designed to familiarize the student with the traditional quilt design MarinerÍs Compass. This is the most striking of the star designs and is more challenging as the points split into two values all the way from the sharp outside points and into the center. The student should have had some experience with piecing of quilt patterns by machines. We will make perforated freezer paper foundations to increase accuracy. This new method does not require sewing through paper. The project is a 15î diameter compass that you may use as a block or in many other ways. Pattern and sewing machines will be provided. More information here.
The Artist's Journal - Laura Cater-Woods
Taking our inspiration from our sea nights and shore days, we will create a series of small journal pages in cloth. Using found objects, ephemera and embellishments will make each page a personal memento. We will talk about the ways a larger ñartistÍs journalî can be a springboard for personal imagery.
Mini Quilts - Sherrill Kahn
The class will include creating at least two or three 8î X 10î painted pieces of fabric to be used for the base of the mini quilt and for additional appliqu³ on the quilt. After painting and heat setting the fabric the student will start making her mini quilt by choosing one of the painted pieces of fabric for the background. The painted fabric piece will be backed with a piece of flannel the same size as the fabric. All types of embellishments can then be added to the mini-quilt, and to finish the quilt, the student will place a piece of fabric on the back of the quilt and bind the edges.
Flowers of Light and Energy - Barbara Olson
Playing with color, texture, depth and shading, students will manifest a small flower piece filled with light and energy. Choosing from one of BarbaraÍs flower drawings eliminates the drafting and allows students to go right to designing with fabric. There are two main ingredients needed to accomplish this technique: 1) A wonderful variety of multi colored shaded fabrics. Batiks, hand dyed, painted or marbled fabric and some novelty flowered fabrics. Solids or calicos do not work. 2) Decorative threads that add texture. You will need a variety of threads in solids and variegated colors to go with your flower color. Construction technique and thread work will be demonstrated. This is only the beginning! Creating these textual prismatic flowers is addictive!
Alaska Images - Kaye England
Based on KayeÍs book African Inspirations we will use the same techniques to execute a pieced or landscape style project with an Alaska flair. Using images you will have seen along the cruise route, things you have pre-planned or perhaps inspirations from a piece of fabric will be your starting point. Kaye will have lots of ideas for anyone who needs a ñjump startî. Your inner artist will appear as you use raw-edge appliqu³ and free form log cabin blocks to finish out your masterpiece. All skill levels. Sewing machines will be provided for this class.
