ALEX ANDERSON
TIPTOE THROUGH THE TULIPS 8:30-11:30AM
Every year, Alex creates a design exclusively for our Quilt Celebration cruise. The special design for this trip will be inspired by our bon voyage from Holland, and include an artistic display of small flowers which, of course, include tulips! You will be learning an exciting style of redwork that you can see in Alex’s book Shadow Redwork. Shadow redwork combines the classic and popular redline embroidery with subtle messages stitched in the background with ecru thread. The result is timeless and fresh!

HAND QUILTING - SECRETS OF SUCCESS 1:00-4:00PM
In this class, Alex will teach how to master the art of traditional hand quilting as you stitch a small whole cloth wall hanging (or extra large pillow). Whether you are left or right handed, tips and techniques will be taught to learn the “rocking stitch”. In addition, you will see how easy it is to quilt in all directions using your thumb! Once the stitch is mastered, your quilting time will double. All the basics from batting to threads will be discussed and one on one attention will be given to either learn or improve your stitch.

SINGING A HAPPY SEAFARING TUNE
First an overall view of Cutaway Needleturn’s latest and greatest basics (self-stick templates or drawn turn line, having your way with points, curves, and corners). Then joyful dimensional appliqué: Split leaves by unit appliqué (with a free-standing option), followed by Rosebuds folded and embroidered, the showy five-petaled Rake Ruching in French wired ribbon or Shell Ruching (simplified) in 100% cotton. The wee bird reviews cautious commonsensical miniaturization skills like laying the head seam flat beneath the embroidered beak! And she’s warbling a message – come learn tricks for free-handing a Copperplate inscription in permanent Pigma pen. Penwork and fine embroidered finishes (the bird’s eye, top-stitching, & botanical details) lift your block out of the ordinary – and make you want go right on to your next one!
