"Ocean Star Chain" Caribbean Mystery Quilt
Tuesday, February 12, 2013 • 8:30 am - 4:00 pm, Lunch Break from 11:30 am -1:00 pm
Kimberly has designed a very special mystery quilt for the 2013 Quilt Seminars at Sea Western Caribbean Cruise! She was inspired to create this new, original design using traditional-style blocks but she has added a fresh, modern, delightful twist! As with all her signature mystery quilt designs, the blocks themselves are easy, fun and stress-free to piece but when they are set together in the quilt, the secondary pattern which emerges is stunning! You'll have the option of selecting a light or dark background and different colorways for your quilt. Kimberly will teach you her fast, easy and efficient techniques for perfect piecing as your stitch. Whether you're a mystery quilt veteran or you've never made a mystery quilt before, you'll spend a fabulous day at sea having a great time, making new friends, and creating a spectacular quilt from your trip to the Caribbean!
Sewing machines will be provided for this class.
Skill level: Beginner to Intermediate
Supply List
You may choose to construct this quilt with light or dark background fabric. The key to making the fabrics sparkle in your quilt is that you choose fabrics carefully based on the color values listed. There should be plenty of contrast between the background fabric and the other fabrics you choose. Here’s a hint: choose a solid or mottled fabric that reads like a solid as your background fabric. If the fabrics looked good lying next to each other – if they are balanced and beautifully coordinated – they will look terrific in this quilt. Kimberly is happy to assist you with your color and fabric choices. If you have any questions, please email Kimberly at Kimberly@kimberlyeinmo.com.
Supplies Needed
- EZ Flying Geese Ruler
- EZ Jelly Roll Ruler (optional, but extremely helpful)
- 45 mm (or larger) rotary cutter – treat yourself to a new blade and experience stress-free cutting all day long!
- Rotary mat
- 10½" square ruler (optional, but very helpful for squaring up blocks)
- Neutral sewing thread in white, ecru or light gray (for light background fabric) or navy or black (for dark background fabric)
- Basic Sewing Supplies such as sewing scissors, straight pins, general sewing supplies, seam ripper
- Bring anything you might need to make your classroom experience more efficient, stress-free, and enjoyable!
(Think: extra light, extension cord, a cushion or pillow to sit on, magnifying or reading glasses… and most importantly, a sense of fun!)
Hints
- To keep all your strips and fabric pieces organized, put them into Ziploc baggies and label accordingly. If buying a kit, consider bringing some extra Ziploc baggies to hold your cut pieces in on the ship.
- If you’ve never made a mystery quilt before, don’t stress about it – remember; this is supposed to be fun and you’ll be trying something new and different. As long as you follow the color values listed in the supply list, your quilt will be beautiful and you’re going to have a ball! Or buy a kit and you won’t have to worry about whether you have chosen the correct fabrics at all!
- Consider using use spray sizing (such as Niagara or Magic Sizing) or synthetic starch to press your fabrics before you cut them according to the rotary cutting chart. The extra crispness makes wrinkles disappear and the fabric easier to cut. Your cutting will be more precise, and this will make your piecing more accurate. Trust me!
Fabric Requirements
You may use your own fabrics, or order a kit for $52.00 (includes shipping). Must be ordered and purchased by December 1, 2012! Credit card required for kit purchase (Visa, Mastercard or Discover only).
If you have remaining fabric after pre-cutting from your strips, BRING ALL REMAINING FABRIC! We will use those leftover strip pieces in class!

Lonestar Strip Magic!

Wednesday, February 13, 2013
2:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Thursday, February 14, 2013 (Continued)
8:00 am - 10:30 am
With just a few 2½" strips the diamond design possibilities are practically endless! Kimberly will teach you how to strip-piece and cut diamond building blocks from strip units using her EZ Jelly Roll Ruler and you'll construct a traditional-looking Lonestar block. The magic with her signature method is there are no "Y" or set-in seams! Sound impossible? Not with her new technique and precision-pieced method! Featured in her new book, Jelly Roll Quilt Magic, you'll stitch a stunning block and checkerboard border in no time at all. You'll be able to take this new technique and expand the horizontal blocks into dozens of unique, eye-catching Lonestar design layout variations later on! The real magic comes from the fact that the quilt is assembled using straight-set blocks – not diamond wedges or blocks on point.
