Attend the 14th Annual Salon Du Tifaifai Quilt Festival
Tifaifai literally means to patch or sew. In the old days, weaving was unknown in Tahiti and women made Tapa Cloth from the bark of Paper Mulberry, Breadfruit and Banyan Trees. The boughs were soaked in a river for several days, the outer bark stripped off, then the inner bark separated from it. The softened inner bark was then placed on a block of wood and beaten with a mallet. When the Tapa was of a uniform thickness, it was dried in the sun and dyed. Floral or geometric patterns were printed or painted on. Early missionaries introduced the
Tahitians to quilting and 2 layer patchwork tifaifai have now taken the place of Tapa (bark cloth). Used as bed covers and pillows by tourists, Tahitians still use tifaifai to cloak newlyweds and cover coffins. To be wrapped in a tifaifai is the highest honor. Each woman has individual quilt patterns which are her trademarks. Bold floral designs are popular, with contrasting colors drawn from nature. Along with the famous dance and the outrigger canoes, there is no more iconic expression of true Polynesia than Tifaifai. Its creators are powerful yet gracious women and proud guardians of their heritage. Their techniques and traditions are passed on hand to hand,
person to person just like in any society. Salon du Tifaifai is put on annually by The Tahitian Quilting Guild or Te Api Nui O Te Tifaifai bringing quilters from many neighboring islands to exchange new ideas, update techniques and rekindle friendships. Polynesia is well known for it's open friendliness and, of course, quilters are the friendliest of all. Your new friends wait to welcome you to their island paradise!
