Quilts that her Hawaiian tutu (grandmother) made when she was
young inspired Gussie to make her first quilt in the 1960’s. She went
on to study Hawaiian quilting and thanks her mentors, Deborah Kakalia for defining
her appliqué technique and Mealii Kalama for her designing skills. After
37 years on the Kamahameha school staff, she is now retired. Besides teaching
quilting one day a week, she still works at the school several days a week
as their Kupuna Cultural Specialist in Hawaiian Heritage. Gussie fondly remembers
her Grandmother who only spoke Hawaiian, and believes it is important to not
forget our ancestors and to share their knowledge. You’ll be sure to
enjoy your day with this lady who is a true treasure of the islands while learning
the art and heritage of Hawaiian quilting.
