FREE MOTION QUILTING PATTERNS
MON, AUG 30
8:30am to 4:00pm, Lunch Break from 11:30am to 1:00pm
If you have not had a chance to take Carol Taylor’s free motion stitching class, do try to sign up as it continues to fill each time it is offered. Everyone wants to be able to machine quilt and get things done more quickly! Carol will teach 16 quilting design patterns, and bring a variety of threads in a kit to show you what threads work best where, and allow you to try them. The only supply you need is quilt sandwiches on which to practice.
There is no project to finish—just a day of trying these different designs to see which ones you might want to take home and use to finish your quilts. This is a hands-on class to learn and practice these fast new ways of quilting your quilts by machine. Learn to do decorative stitching with those metallic and rayon threads! Machines need only have a straight stitch to do these designs. And even the students who’ve had very little quilting experience are successful using these methods. You’ll be able to give your quilts a unique flavor, style and sparkle using these methods-and get all of those unfinished tops quilted quickly!
Sewing machines will be provided for this class.
All levels are welcome even if you’ve not tried free motion quilting before.

FRI, SEPT 3 • 1:00pm to 4:00pm
Have you always admired those pieced circles? You can do it with ease and without even pinning. No templates required either! Create a small (31 X 31) unique quilt of your very own while learning to piece circles and do Carol’s trademark circular quilting to complete the look. You will start with piecing simple circles that you cut improvisationally and move on to more complex circles. All done with a minimal amount of measuring to free you up and allow you to think outside the box. You’ll also learn how to finish your quilts with facings instead of bindings. You’ll be thrilled with the resulting small quilt, which you can do in many different color schemes and hang in your own home or give as a gift. Check Carol’s website listed above to see how many quilts using improvisational circles Carol has made using these same techniques, and then come make your very own!

ALASKA MOTIFS: DESIGNING WITH CUTOUTS
SAT, SEPT 4
8:30am to 4:00pm, Lunch Break from 11:30am to 1:00pm
This class is about creating a remembrance of your trip to Alaska using cutouts as the basis for your quilt. There are so many simple motifs that we will see on our trip through Alaska. You can use something as simple as a leaf, flower, bird or even an abstract design from a totem pole.
This process is a little like cutting snowflakes when we were kids. No sewing machines will be used. We’ll draw and cut several designs that are meaningful to you and choose the one you like best. Carol will bring sample motif ideas already cut that you may use too. We’ll only use a 6 ½” size block for this project (like the smallest squares on the samples) to make it an easy, fun project to make your own Alaskan quilt in no time.
Carol will guide you step by step in creating your own simple “motif” design, cut it easily, and fuse it to blocks. You’ll leave with a totally original quilt design and lots more confidence in your own abilities to make more original quilts using these easy methods!

OILS AND FOILS
MON, AUG 30
8:30am to 4:00pm, Lunch Break from 11:30am to 1:00pm
Dip into surface design! You will be able to add dimension and interest to your quilts using oil bars and foils. Oil bars are usually used by artists, not quilters—they are basically oil paints in a stick form. They differ from oil pastels in that they actually dry out and can be heat set into the fabric, making them more washable and archival than pastels. They glide on smooth and creamy and leave no hand on the fabric at all. They are so easy to blend that you can create soft airbrushed looks or blend colors right on the fabric. A great way to paint on fabric!
Foiling is an easy way to add glitz to your projects. The “foil” we’ll use is a spray of metallic particles on a plastic sheet, more like Mylar than aluminum foil. We will learn how to adhere this film of particles to fabric. Crafters have used foil for years; the foil you will use in class is designed for T-shirts and banners. We’ll do a series of exercises to learn the techniques involved. In the afternoon you will be able to put it all together to create a fun and easy surface design project!

CLASS NOTE:
Holding a quilt seminar on a cruise ship is a unique experience. Sometimes
there are space and time challenges that prevent our being able to be “project
oriented” and we must concentrate more on process. It is very unlikely
that you will have an absolutely finished project at the end of a class. It
is helpful if your expectations match these realities. But regardless
of how far you are able to progress, our instructors are professionals -- some
of the best in the quilting world -- and we know you will learn many new techniques
and have a wonderful experience.
