You will be assured of being placed in three full day class sections. Class assignments and supply lists will be mailed to you along with your notice for final payment 90 days prior to departure. This wonderful wall quilt is paper pieced and machine appliquéd. You will be thrilled at how sharp these skinny points will be and how quick and easy it is to machine appliqué these curves. You will have several blocks completed in class with detailed instructions on how to finish your quilt top at home.

Skill level: Intermediate

Items you should bring from home:

  • Extra/empty bobbin for your machine
  • Thread to match for piecing (gray usually works well)
  • 80/12 or 90/14 needles for paper piecing
  • 60/8 microtex needles for machine appliqué
  • Rotary cutter, board and ruler
  • Nylon thread-YLI brand in .004 size
  • Water soluble glue stick
  • Scissors-both paper and plastic
  • Press cloth-old wash cloth or towel will work great

Fabric: Bring your own fabric or pre-order the optional fabric kit from Karen. 100% cotton only please – Washed and Ironed

  • Karen used six different yellow fabrics but you could use just one. If you use six different yellow fabrics purchase 1/2 yard of each fabric plus 1/4 yard of one yellow for the piping around the border. If you purchase just one yellow fabric you need 3 yards for the blocks and the piping.
  • Karen used five different blue prints for the points. You would need 1/3 yard of each of these. If you want to use just one print fabric for the points you only need to purchase 1 1/2 yards.
  • Karen used two different blue prints for the curved/circular portion of the block. (The 1/4 circle) You need to purchase 1/3 yard of these two prints or if you prefer to use just one fabric you will need to purchase 5/8 yard.

From the dark blue print, in the blocks, on the border and binding you need to purchase 3 yards.

Garden Medley

Karen says, “I just love seeing the beautiful colors of the blooming flowers in the spring and summer! At least in my area, that is the only time we see them in bloom!" But now you can see them year round with this easy to make 21" x 24" wall quilt. There are three panels in this project and in this workshop we will focus on just the center panel. You will be thrilled with your smooth curves, sharp points and perfect circles as you begin to hand appliqué on this wonderful little project!

Wow! This is a fun project! You will be amazed how easy it is to get smooth curves and sharp points as you machine appliqué using an invisible stitch. This project also includes reverse appliqué and a fabric overlay for some added excitement. Come spend a fun packed six hours and learn lots of tips and tricks!

Sunbonnet Sue Sends a Valentine

Sunshine Maze

Inspired by really bright fabrics used here in 12 different colours, this striking quilt with a centre of different sized squares turned on point is further enhanced by the addition of plain black and coloured stripes. The optical illusion effect is emphasised by the quilting in rainbow colours and straight lines. You can easily achieve piecing this quilt top in a day. Nothing could be simpler! From ‘Sunshine Maze’ by Christine Porter (JWD Publishing). This is a really fun class and Chris will also show her new Color Wheel to help you with color choices.

Dresden Wedge

Chris has designed a new special ruler with Creative Grids which makes creating this Dresden Plate a really easy task. The ruler even includes the central circle. Chris is busy making a ton of new samples and this is the first – more to follow. You can use a jelly roll of 2 ½" strips or wider strips of fabric to create some really super quilts. For this class you can make one large Dresden Plate or several smaller ones, a cushion, a table runner or more blocks to make a larger quilt. The sky is the limit. The technique is fast and fun and you’ll certainly have something great to take home as a memory of this special cruise.

Learn how to group your fabrics into Color Families, learn about Value, and learn how to add that Zinger and Zap into your work. Chris will teach you to gain confidence in your color choices and demonstrate her new Color Wheel and the new Creative Grids Ruler that helps you make it. Don't miss this, it could change your life! Folk Fish For Fun

These wall hangings are done simply and by hand. I have done these in both wool (my favorite) and cottons. They have different looks but are both quite fun. If you haven’t tried wool, this is your chance and we will be looking at shapes and colors as we discuss folk art how-to’s and getting “Out of the Box" for no pressure fun! Mixing cottons, silks and wools is beautiful and wonderful to play with so feel free to throw in some wool, silk and some cotton plaids, stripes, polka dots or tone on tones for your fabulous fish!

Learn a variety of crazy quilt, embroidery and silk ribbon stitches, beading techniques and wired silk ribbon flowers while making this stunning class project. Students individualize their purses with an assortment of ribbons, beads and trims. Kathy has assembled kits that include your needed material supplies. You only need to bring hand sewing tools to class, making your preparation for this class minimal. There will be a variety of specialty fabrics and colors to choose from. There will be a sewing machine available for the students to use on board when they finish their embroidery stitches and beading. If you work steadily, you should be able to use your purse at one of the ship’s formal dinners!

Let's Go Fishing!

This wall hanging will be a perfect memory quilt from your cruise across the Caribbean Sea to Panama! The suggested size is 24 x 30” however you can make it larger if you want. You will learn to design and fuse rocks, fish and plants to your underwater scene. Kathy will teach crazy quilt stitches and techniques for using beads, sequins and overlays. Go fishing in your sewing room for a blue background fabric that looks like water and batik fabrics for making fish and rocks. During your cruise, you will be able to collect shells, beads and other embellishments to add to your wall hanging. This project will be finished at home with machine quilting. Don’t let this one get away….it’s going to be a fun adventure on the high seas!

  • 24" x 30" fabric for your background (water colors)
  • 2 yards of a light weight fusible (preferably Wonder Under®.)
  • 2 yards of freezer paper
  • Scraps of netting and sheer fabrics for overlays (at least 15" square and in a variety of colors)
  • A good variety of colors and fabrics to be used for rocks, fish and plants (these may be prints, tone on tone or batik fabrics)

Quilts With Great Edges

Enjoy Kathy’s expert, comprehensive overview of the techniques of finishing your quilts! Students will make take-home samples including a double fold binding with mitered corners and connected tails, rick-rack binding, reversible binding, a fused binding, 3 prairie point techniques, scallops with mitered inner points, single and double piping, flanges and facings. Learn about the history of bindings, how to make self-bound edges, Amish binding, when to use single-fold, double-fold, bias and straight grain bindings and how to finish a binding with hand or machine stitches. You need this class!

Supply List

Items you should bring from home:

  • One 15" x 15" quilt block or quilt sandwich. The layers should be basted or quilted and have a thin batting (e.g. Hobbs 80/20 or Warm & Natural). The batting and backing should be 1" larger than the quilt top on all four sides.
  • A coordinating binding fabric for this square (cut before class – 2 strips, each 2 ½" x 42", cut selvage to selvage or on the bias)
  • Cotton thread to match the binding fabric.

Basic sewing supplies including:

  • scissors
  • Pins
  • Mechanical pencil
  • Needle for hand sewing
  • 45 mm rotary cutter, a small mat and 3" x 3" or 4" x 4" acrylic ruler
  • Fabric marking pen
  • White or neutral colored thread
  • Small spool of red thread

Order now: You must order the required pattern kit in advance. The kit must be ordered in advance no later than January 15th.

Required Kit: In addition to the supply list each student must purchase a $40 kit for the class.
Kit includes: A 50 page instructional booklet and pre-cut fabrics for the edge treatment samples.

Demonstration – Embellishing Vintage Photos

Thursday, February 16, 2012  • 12:30 pm - 1:00 pm

Kathy will show samples of her framed vintage photos that were embellished with crazy quilt stitches, silk ribbon and beads. She will demonstrate how to make simple stitches with pearl cotton and silk ribbons to enhance photos. She will bring a variety of vintage photos which she has transferred onto fabric and have them for sale through the onboard quilt shop.

This is a demonstration that is open to all students and will be held in the sewing room/quilt shop.
